General description

Electronic passports demonstrate how privacy can co-exist with security, helping build public acceptance of using integrated circuits in a range of documents from ID cards and health-cards to driving licenses.

Background information

Over the next ten years, most of the 750 million passports currently in use will be replaced by electronic passports. Driving advances in smart card technology, secure contactless identification and biometrics, the electronic passport market will also bring about all kinds of improvements to payment and access control schemes all over the world.

For these types of documents, controlling access to sensitive personal information is a fundamental requirement. Our secure smart card IC product families feature highly advanced counter-measures against attacks as well as hardware firewalls, ensuring personal data stays safe and secure on the chip. As a result, Common Criteria EAL 5+ security certificates have been awarded to chips from all our smart card IC families including the SmartMX 36K, 72K and 80K electronic passport chip solutions.
