NXP and Trusted Logic partner to drive NFC middleware integration

NXP, the independent semiconductor company founded by Philips, and Trusted Logic, the leading provider of Trusted Execution Environments for embedded systems, today announced a partnership in which Trusted Logic will distribute and market the NFC middleware, which embeds the NXP Reference Implementation. This agreement will accelerate NFC deployment, with a faster time to market and skilled resources to support NFC middleware integration into NFC-enabled wireless devices.

Under this agreement, Trusted Logic will license the NXP Reference Implementation, which has been validated with the latest NXP NFC controller PN544. Trusted Logic will enhance the solution with their Java Specification Request 257 implementation (JSR257) to enable NFC technology in Java Micro Edition environments (J2ME). Furthermore, this partnership will enable NFC middleware integration with the most common mobile operating systems and facilitate integration services to handset manufacturers. These services will allow flexibility in the NFC market ramp up and reduce the time to market for handset manufacturers.

The NXP Reference Implementation, comprising the NFC Forum and ETSI specifications, facilitates both the interconnection of NFC devices and seamless interoperability with the existing contactless infrastructure. While interfacing the NXP PN544, the NFC middleware, integrated in a baseband or in an application processor, delivers the complete software solution required to build an NFC-enabled device.

As an independent software company, Trusted Logic will license the NXP Reference Implementation directly to end customers, under its Trusted NFC offering, and provide support for the integration.

NXP and Trusted Logic will continue to collaborate to ensure that future generations of NXP NFC controllers are validated with Trusted NFC.

Chris Feige, General Manager NFC, NXP Semiconductors, said: “NXP has always been at the forefront of NFC development at both hardware and software levels. We are pleased to work with Trusted Logic to shorten the time-to-market for the integration of middleware into NFC-enabled devices, which is critical now as we expect the mobile NFC market to ramp up fast in the coming months. We will continue to design industry-leading NFC chips and to develop related NFC firmware and middleware implementations to support the growing demand.”

Dominique Bolignano, CEO of Trusted Logic, comments: “We are very enthusiastic to collaborate with NXP Semiconductors on NFC middleware. Trusted Logic is again recognized for its key competencies in embedded software development and integration, and its ability to support market leaders. The number of NFC projects has significantly increased in the previous months so this is definitely the right timing to speed up NFC software integrations.”
